Using CheckMite+ to Control the
Small Hive Beetle (SHB) - Step 3
Install the strips in the hive
| BeeCARE recommends the following procedure to install the CheckMite+ Strips into an SHB-infested hive. This procedure is in accordance with the EPA and manufacturer's guidelines. Refer to the labeling provided with CheckMite+ for further information. |
| Step 3a - Clean the bottom board After removing all hive boxes, clean the bottom board with a hive tool to remove any material that may interfere with the tape adhering to the board with you install the strips. | |
| Step 3b - Wear protective gloves Use latex surgical gloves, as shown here, dishwasher gloves, or otherwise chemical resistant gloves. Bee gloves are not acceptable. The active ingredient in CheckMite+ Strips (coumaphos) is an organophosphate, a group of highly toxic chemicals. The toxicity of coumaphos when in contact with the skin is much higher than that of Apistan. | |
| Step 3c - Remove the prepared strips from the sealed bag Per the instructions in Step 2 - Prepare the strips for use in the hive, you should have placed the prepared strips in a sealed plastic bag. Remove the set of strips you have prepared for the hive from the bag, reseal the bag, and set the bag aside. | |
| Step 3d - Place the strips on the bottom board Place the cardboard with the strips in the center of the bottom board, strip-side down and smooth side up. Make sure the cardboard is aligned so the corrugated aisles are parallel to the sides of the hive; i.e. the aisles should point toward the front and back of the hive, and the strips should point toward the sides of the hive. | |
| Step 3e - Tape the cardboard to the bottom board Using duct or shipping tape, securely tape the cardboard to the bottom board. | |
| Step 3f - Replace the hive boxes Replace the hive boxes in the reverse order in which you removed them. | |
| Step 3g - Place CheckMite+ Strips in the brood cluster To ensure the beetles come into contact with the coumaphos, place a strip on either side of the brood cluster, as shown here. |
Note: For maximum efficacy, leave the strips in the hive for at least 42 days (six weeks). Do not leave the strips in the hive for more than 45 days.
