The Telescoping Cover, or Top Cover, is the outer cover on the top of a beehive, usually made of wood and covered with a metal sheet.  It is called a "telescoping" cover because its rim extends past and over the sides of the hive box.

The BeeCARE EZ-Fill Top Cover has a unique filler cap that allows you to both check the level of syrup in the hive-top feeder and refill the feeder without removing the weights and lifting the cover.

The filler cap screws onto an adapter mounted permanently in the cover, and the assembly is completely weatherproof when only hand-tightened.  The filler tube has diameter of 1-1/2", making it easy to even sight-check the syrup level and to refill the feeder with sugar syrup when needed.

The Top Cover normally rests on the Inner Cover, on top of the topmost hive box, and extends beyond the sides of the hive to provide a rain shield.  However, if you are using the Hive-top Feeder, the Top Cover will sit directly on the feeder, without the Inner Cover.

It is customary to stack rocks, bricks or cinderblock on top of the cover to prevent raccoons and the like from raiding the hive.  Added weight on the cover also ensures high winds won't disassemble the hive during a storm.  Go to the top of the pageIf you are using the EZ-Fill Top Cover with our Dual-Access Hive-top Feeder, you'll never need to remove the weights to check or refill the feeder.

Tip: If the wind is blowing when you are filling syrup, you may want to shield the flow of liquid from the wind with your body to keep the wind from blowing the liquid onto the top of the cover.  You may also use a funnel to minimize any spilling.  We have found that using a plastic, one-gallon milk jug with the bottom cut out works great as a syrup funnel.

Note: The Inner Cover should not be used when the Hive-top Feeder is installed.  If the inner cover is installed below the feeder, the small space between the cover and the feeder discourages the bees from accessing the sugar syrup.  Using the inner cover above the feeder will interfere with checking the syrup level and refilling the feeder through the EZ-Fill Top Cover.  Use the inner cover only when the Hive-top Feeder is not on the hive.

The EZ-Fill Top Cover is part of the Starter Hive.
