The only woodenware beehive component that is a little tricky to paint is the Ultimate Bottom Board.  The simple instructions here will show you a simple method of putting an attractive, functional, and weather-resistant finish on your new Ultimate Bottom Board.  You are, of course, free to paint yours however you choose; we recommend these steps because of our own experience using these products and because of what we have learned through using different methods of painting.  We believe we have come up with the easiest method of providing your Ultimate Bottom Board its best weather seal, but if your method works better, let us know!

Tip: The easiest way to use these instructions is to first study them in detail on your computer.  Then, print off the individual "Step" pages and take them with you when you are painting.

Painting Supplies
Before you start: assemble your supplies
Get your supplies all together before you start.  These should include:
  • Paint
A high-quality, exterior acrylic latex paint is the easiest to apply and provides years of excellent weather protection.  See Painting for a recommendation on a type of paint that works well..
  • Stirring Stick
You will need to stir the paint to ensure the paint base and the pigment are completely mixed before painting.
  • Rag
Paint inevitably needs to be wiped off the painted unit, your hands, etc.
  • Brushes
A mid-size or smaller brush is ideal, as shown here.  A large brush may work well for a brood box but is too wide to paint the Ultimate Bottom Board.
  • Masking tape
Needed to make the painting job easy and to ensure clean, attractive paint lines
  • Scissors
    For trimming the masking tape
  • Knife
    For cutting the masking tape

Step 1: Mask off areas not to be painted
You will need to use masking tape to mask off the surfaces on your Ultimate Bottom Board that should not be painted.  Masking makes the painting process much easier and produces the clean, straight paint lines you want to see in your finished board.
