Comb foundation is a thin sheet either of plastic or beeswax, with the cell bases of worker cells embossed on both sides in the same hexagonal shape as produced naturally by honeybees.  Foundation is placed within a wooden frame before installation in the hive.  If the foundation is plastic, it is normally sprayed with beeswax, as shown here, to induce the bees to build out the comb on the embossed cells.

Both the Brood Boxes and the Honey Supers included with the Starter Hive contain frames with the best quality plastic foundation, sprayed with beeswax.  The beeswax coating encourages the worker bees to build out the comb quickly, and the rigid plastic foundation will give years of reliable service for many generations of brood and seasons of honey extraction.
