Click for more detailStep 6 - Remove free burr or brace comb fragments
If you found burr or brace comb on hive surfaces, use your steel hive tool to clean it from the hive surfaces, such as the bottom of the hive-top feeder.
Click for more detailStep 7 - Reclaim honey or pollen from free comb fragments
Any pieces of burr or brace comb you removed which contain honey or pollen should be reinserted into the hive so the bees can reclaim the food.  Simply insert the comb fragments into the entrance.

The comb fragments may be removed in a few days after the bees have had time to take the food they need out of this comb.  Use a probe or grabber tool to remove the comb by pulling it out the entrance, as shown here.

Place the hive-top feeder on the brood box, being careful to not crush any bees in the process.  Ensure that the feeder reservoir is clean.  Brush out any bees that may be crawling inside the reservoir of the feeder.
Click for more detailFill the hive-top feeder with at least one gallon of sugar syrup.
Click for more detailStep 9 - Replace the top cover
Place the telescoping top cover over the hive-top feeder.  Put the weights on top of the cover to ensure it doesn't blow off and to keep out varmints.

You're done with your first hive inspection!
