A good bee hat and veil are items you must have in your beekeeping inventory. These two work together in the critical job of keeping bees away from your most vulnerable targets -- your head and neck. BeeCARE recommends an integrated hat and veil, where your complete head protection is part of your bee suit, as shown here. A separate hat and veil are not required with a more convenient bee suit, such as the BeeCARE Full Body Suit. With this suit, the veil and hat are integrated and much more convenient.
If you use the older-style separate hat and veil, the hat should be light-colored and porous, to reflect the sun's heat and provide ventilation for your sweaty scalp. It should also be rigid, and have a wide brim, like a pith helmet, so it can securely hold the veil and give you a little shade for your eyes if you are working in direct sunlight.
Regarding protection from stings, honeybees seem especially interested in orifices (like nostrils, mouths and ears), and they really go for the eyes. Bees get exceptionally annoyed when they get stuck in your hair too, and if they get untangled and free, they are almost guaranteed to sting, just to get revenge. And if you are allergic to bee venom and you are stung anywhere in the neck region, the resulting swelling could become life-threatening. Finally, a well-tied veil keeps bees from getting under your shirt and crawling around on your skin.
