Busy Honeybees

Click for more detailHere is a picture of field bees coming in and out of the hive during their daily foraging routine.  The honey bees clustered on the front hive wall above the entrance are guard bees.  They are protecting the hive from invaders, such as other bees, wasps, or humans.

The bees pictured here are of the species apis mellifera (Western or European Honeybee), as are most domestic strains of honeybees used for honey production.
